Composite materials provide an important pathway to stronger, greener and lighter materials for our daily life and special applications, such as automotive and aerospace industry. These materials can make use of different kinds of nanoparticulate filler materials to convey their mechanical robustness. In many cases, the filler material and the polymer matrix need to be linked using a compatibilising agent in order to create chemical links between the two entities.
The aim of this internship is to compare the usability and scope of an array of physicochemical methods (TGA, cryoporometry, NMR, Karl-Fisher, extraction methods, etc.) in order to assess the number of reactive sites on a range of inorganic and organic nanofillers such as silica, lignin, cellulose, etc.
The trainee will condition the materials and characterise the reactive sites before and after reaction.
