Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) contributes, as an RTO, to the development of Luxembourg’s economy and society via its three research departments. The Materials Research and Technology Department (MRT) translates cutting-edge research into practice focusing on advanced analytics, processing, fabrication and materials.

The Plasma Process and Engineering (PPE) group within the MRT department focuses its research on prototyping, upscaling and process developments for efficient surface modifications of materials using dry chemical and physical techniques.

The atmospheric-pressure plasma surface treatment of polymers is still attracting much attention at the industrial scale owing to its advantages over other techniques. In particular, its ability to modify the surfaces without affecting the polymer's bulk properties make them a technique of choice to improve polymer-polymer adhesion properties without applying any glue.
The proposed internship will aim to investigate atmospheric-pressure plasma surface treatments of thin polymer foils for enhanced polymer-polymer adhesion.

Description

  • After a training on the atmospheric plasma process, the student will carry out plasma surface treatments of thin polymer foils.
  • In particular, the influence of the different process conditions on the polymer chemistry and morphology will be investigated. In this aim and in collaboration with the different analytical experts at LIST, he/she will contribute to the characterization of the surface properties of the treated polymers by using complementary techniques such as SEM, FT-IR, XPS, etc.
  • After the assembling of the treated polymers according to different conditions (i.e., temperature, pressure, duration), T-peel tests will be carried out to evaluate the final adhesion properties of the different systems.
  • Data will be summarized in the form of a technical report.
