Lux researchers sign 2nd hydrogen partnership

Researchers in Luxembourg are developing new materials for generating hydrogen for fuel cells, after signing a second project partnership with French firm 3D Oxides.

The four-year partnership will see researchers from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology work on making water fractionation easier, more efficient, more affordable and more environmentally sustainable.

Specifically, the project focuses on materials for the creation of battery fuel with low catalyst content, new generation electrolysers and high-performance photolysis systems.

The two partners previously installed a joint lab in Belval where they demonstrated Sybilla 450, which offers an innovative way to process materials through chemical beam vapor deposition. In a first joint project, they launched Hephoto, improving the efficiency of photo-electrodes and making it possible to fractionate the water.

The second project, Strontium Titanate Oxide with Narrow Bandgap (STONB), is led by Dr Emanuele Barborini and focuses on photo-electrochemical (PEC) water splitting by solar photons. In this process solar energy is captured by the surface of special materials and exploited to break the water molecules in hydrogen and oxygen. The team will research the use of strontium titanate for use in this project.

Both projects are funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR).
