The project OASIS focuses on the optimisation of an industrial system under environmental and economic constraints. The environmental performances of the process are computed on a lifecycle perspective, based on the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). OASIS couples LCA with optimization algorithms automatically seeking the best design alternative (in the realm of technically and economically feasible solutions) according to predefined environmental criteria.
The project, which had drinking water production as the application domain, has developed a generic process eco-design modelling framework, rooted on coupling of process modelling, LCA and multi-objective optimization algorithms.
The main deliverable of the project is an “Optimization-Process simulation-LCA” tool, conceived for the use by process engineers and drinking water production plants managers.
The overarching goal of this workshop is to foster interactions about how optimization methods can meet the expectations of industrial partners for improving their processes. During the first part of the workshop the main finding of the OASIS project will be presented. Then, speakers from research and industry will present the application of optimization methods to various industrial processes. Discussion sessions will enable sharing of experience between speakers and participants and envisioning optimization applications to new real-world problems.
