Information Security Education Day (ISED)

2016 Theme: Security in the realm of Big Data & Analytics

The Information Security Education Day (ISED) is a yearly one-day event co-organized by University of Luxembourg and Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST).

The ISED is an event that aims to provide each year new knowledge on a hot-topic related to security and privacy. Primarily it targets the current and former students of the professional MSSI Master (Master en management de la sécurité des systèmes d'information). However the ISED also provides an ideal forum where academics and practitioners can learn about the different facets of a key-topic, exchange and discuss ideas, and compare experiences.

In this spirit, ISED seeks to be an interdisciplinary event, open to all. The speakers will bring their expertise in different areas covering the legal, technical and research-wise facets of the theme.

SubtitleSecurity in the realm of Big Data & Analytics

Objectifs

Big data refers to the retrieval, storage, aggregation and analysis of large amounts of structured and unstructured data, while analytics concerns the capacity to build information and knowledge on top of these raw data, using statistics, AI, machine learning and classification techniques.

Big Data is a buzzword that reflects the trend of making computation and analytics affordable to companies and opening new markets with analytics-based services (IoT, Fintech, smart systems, decision-support services, recommendation systems). Data is generated on a very large scale by a wide range of sources, such as sensors, embedded devices, social media and audio/video. Advances in storage technologies and their continuously falling prices allow huge amounts of data to be collected and stored for a long time, creating brand new markets aiming to valorize this data.

Recent studies, for example by McKinsey, emphasize the tremendous importance of this relatively new field by calling it the “next frontier for competition”. Other studies even compare the value of data for modern businesses to the value of oil, referring to data as “the new oil”.
