LIST WATER LECTURE on Critical Zone sciences #4

Distinctive aspects water and energy partitioning in a semi-arid forest ecosystem

Arid and semi-arid regions belong to the most vulnerable climate change “hot spots” while also contributing to global scale variations in the water and carbon cycles. Observations from the semi-arid ‘timber-line’ do not always fit the large-scale eco-physiological patterns, but provide important test beds for predicted changes in ecosystem functioning and underlying processes. I will review a few examples from the Yatir site operating at the edge of the Negev desert in the past 20 years. For example, the evolution of the “Convector Effect” of large sensible heat fluxes from the leaf scale to that of the atmospheric boundary layer, and the “Capacitance Effect” for decoupling the water fluxes into and out of the trees, critical in this environment.
