Appreciation for the invisible – the significance of groundwater-stream interactions to stream ecosystems
The connections between streams and aquifers and the exchange of mass and energy between them is common, but invisible to our naked eye. And yet, we have quantified the impact of these exchanges on water quality including pollutant and nutrient retention. In this presentation, I will highlight some of the stream-groundwater work that we have conducted in the Arctic, Antarctica, and mountain streams in the US to explore the size, dynamics, and impacts of the exchanges between these features.
