Workshop on Soil Sustainability

1st Workshop on soil sustainability in Luxembourg

On this day, soil users, researchers, and legislators will meet in celebration of World Soil Day (annually, 5th December), to discuss the future of Luxembourg soils.

Soil researchers at Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) will host the hybrid (virtual and in-person) workshop that includes keynote presentations, an invited poster session, and a moderated discussion about what is the most important issue for Luxembourg soils, from the very different perspectives of soil stakeholders (farmers, industry, ministries, researchers, and legislators).

Healthy soils are a pre-requisite to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and form the basis of FAO’s Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.

Soil are a key reservoir of global biodiversity and the basis of food security. In Luxembourg as with many regions in Europe and the world, soils are threatened by urbanization, pollution, and erosion. Soils produce greenhouse gases that increase the risk of climate extremes, and nutrient runoff that threatens our fresh water supply.

These are global issues. How will we tackle these challenges to protect and manage soils sustainably in Luxembourg? Stakeholders will come together at this workshop to find solutions to these problems.
