Known as BESSER (BEtter Smart Software fastER), the project is set to empower both software engineers and non-technical individuals to utilise AI advancements and low-code/no-code techniques, accelerating the development of complex software systems.

The project, launched on 1 April, comes in response to the mounting demand for smart software amid an ongoing digital transformation. Despite the advancements in the field, the complexity of software development often outpaces the capability of current tools and methods. BESSER, created in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability, and Trust (SnT), aims to bridge this gap.

"There's a clear demand for this type of software, but also a shortage of skilled people to develop it. BESSER aims to democratise software development, ensuring that anyone can adapt or even create their own smart software," said Professor Cabot.

The global market for low-code platforms is projected to reach £22.8 billion in 2023, with low-code application development accounting for over 65% of application development activity by 2024, according to Gartner.

Francesco Ferrero, Director of the IT for Innovative Services department at LIST, said, "Jordi and the BESSER project will contribute to position Luxembourg and LIST as a global centre of excellence in the future of software."

Marc Schiltz, CEO of the Luxembourg National Research Fund, added, "Prof Cabot's work on smart software generation, leveraging AI advancements, has groundbreaking potential and will further reinforce Luxembourg’s position in this crucial area."
