Published on 29/11/2018

On 13-14 November 2018, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) participated in the annual Luxembourg Internet Days event organized by Lu-Cix at the Chamber of Commerce, Luxembourg-Kirchberg.

This event made for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) professionals takes place in November every year. Now in its fifth edition, the event has attracted over a thousand industry experts and decision makers from around the globe. The two themes of this year have been « Network Security & Monitoring » and « Cloud Security and Access », two very sensitive topics for the sector and extremely relevant to its vital security and trust requirements.

ICT topics are part of LIST’s everyday life. Researchers working in the domain of IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) work with the objective to fulfil one of the Institute’s mission as a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that is to be the catalyst of national ambition in innovation. They work together with industrial partners with the ambition to develop new services with a high level of informatics and to support the innovation of IT-based services. In this way, participating in the 2018 Luxembourg Internet Days has been a great opportunity to meet with the peers and present LIST’s activities in the field.

Focus on the Directive on security of network and information systems (NIS)

On day 1, together with five other speakers namely Leonardo De Vizio (Policy assistant at the European Commission), Sébastien Tonello (Information Security Officer at POST Luxembourg), Jean-Philippe Boever (Legal expert), Luc Tapella (Director of ILR), Rayna Stamboliyska (Founder & CEO of RS Strategy), Sébastien Pineau (Lead partnership officer at LIST) was invited to join the round table « How very nice to be NIS », that was moderated by J-P Boever & R. Stamboliyska. The Directive on security of network and information systems (NIS) has been addressed – From a change of paradigm to a change of mentalities.

The NIS Directive is the first piece of EU-wide legislation on cybersecurity. It provides legal measures to boost the overall level of cybersecurity in the EU. The NIS Directive is part of the Digital Single Market strategy of the European Commission that aims to open up digital opportunities for people and business and enhance Europe's position as a world leader in the digital economy. In this context, together with the panellists, Pineau talked about the prospects of applying the NIS Directive in Luxembourg and the consequences for the operators of essential services and for the digital service providers. He explains that « ILR's approach is fortunate because it favors collaborative and progressive aspects. All relevant sectors are already involved in the identification phase. the success of ILR in implementing the telecom directive is inspiring for NIS ».
