In conjunction with the 11th edition of the "Joint Business Council Taiwan-Luxembourg" (TLJBC) platform, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) has welcomed a delegation of 24 entrepreneurs and researchers from Taiwan to its technology showroom at the Maison de l’Innovation in Belval.

Luxembourg-Taiwan partnership

The Taiwan-Luxembourg Joint Business Council (TLJBC) is a platform that helps Taiwanese and Luxembourg companies to strengthen their existing business contacts and/or to explore new opportunities in the areas of trade, investment, and research cooperation between Taiwan and Luxembourg.

Summary of LIST's activities

After an overview of LIST as a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) developing at the heart of Luxembourg's innovation ecosystem, the Taiwanese delegation, led by Mr Walter Chang, vice-president of the China Association for International Economic Cooperation (CAFIEC), met LIST's three departments.

The delegation was able to learn about the core competencies and related activities, and then different presentations and demonstrations highlighted LIST's skills in:

  • Smart Mobility: LIST's Mobility Urban Values (MUV) and Sustainable Urban Consolidation CentrES for conStruction (SUCCESS) projects were presented by Francesco Ferrero (Lead Partnership Office - Mobility, Logistics and Smart Cities). Staff from the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), Olivier Klein (Senior Research Fellow), Véronique Van Acker (Researcher), and Tai-Yu Ma (Senior Researcher), were also in attendance to present the activities of the Urban Development and Mobility Department.
  • Smart Space: the Disaster Risk Financing and Transfer (e-DRIFT) project funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) was introduced by Patrick Matgen (Lead R&T Associate - Remote Sensing and Natural Resources Modelling.
  • Cognitive Environment: participants had the opportunity to visit the Cognitive Environment Lab, presented by Thibaud Latour (Head of Research Unit – Human Dynamics In Cognitive Environments) and Luc Vandenabeele (Lead Engineer - Multimodal Analytics and Multi-user Natural Interaction).
  • Smart Buildings: Sylvain Kubicki (Senior R&T Associate - Digital Built Environment Management) presented the BIM-based EU-wide Standardised Qualification Framework for achieving Energy Efficiency (BIMEET).
  • Greentech Innovation: Pau Ferrer Alegre (Head of Research Unit - Environmental and Industrial Biotechnologies) presented the core activities and competencies of LIST's environmental and industrial biotechnologies.
  • Policy Support: support activities for environmental policies at the national and European level, in particular policies on chemical products, (industrial) installations, waste, biodiversity, and soil, were presented by Arno Biwer (Senior R&T Associate - Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity).

These presentations and demonstrations resulted in some fruitful and productive discussions with members of the Taiwanese delegation, reflecting possible points of convergence. LIST's staff also had the opportunity to learn more about the development of the circular economy in Taiwan as well as to discuss projects focusing on clean tech, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), the Internet of Things, etc.
