First positive results for a lab fit for industry

Published on 09/08/2019

A few months after the inauguration of state-of-the-art facilities for biotechnologies research on the Hautcharage site, results are already very positive, opening the door to new opportunities for LIST, its researchers and partners.

These facilities dedicated to bioreactors were designed to better suit the growth of their activities in industrial biotechnologies up the TRL (“technology readiness level”) scale and so it proved with 400 m2 of new premises. The results were immediate: two of the industrial partnerships sealed at June’s Tech Day 2019 - Probiotic and Blue Horizon – depended on the cutting-edge science coming out of Hautcharage. PM International, a strategic partner whose R&D department is based at LIST, also benefits from these facilities.

As Samuel Jourdan, lab manager within LIST’s environmental research and technology platform explains, it shows the value to industry of a synthetic biology laboratory at this scale: "These bioreactors help us to cultivate different types of cells such as plant cells, bacteria, yeast or algae in order to produce biomasse, proteins, secondary metabolites and other high added value molecules at a pre-industrial scale".

Jenny Renaut, Environmental research and technology platform leader, emphasizes that the facilities at Hautcharage are the result of months of teamwork within different teams. For Plant Biotechnologies group leader Jean-François Hausman, it represents the best of LIST. "Science brings us closer to industry. In this way, this lab exemplifies partnership, as well as teamwork and transversality: all the ingredients necessary for LIST to become a high performing RTO”.
