After working for more than 15 years with SCIEX – an international company headquartered in the USA producing equipment in the field of mass spectrometry - the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) recently signed an MOU agreement with them, reinforcing their working relationship.
Dr Jenny Renaut, in charge and overseeing this new phase of collaboration stated, “We have always been in close contact with SCIEX to develop new protocols and they offer a really great service providing equipment used at LIST for environmental analysis and omics”. This covers a whole range of fields such as pesticides in water or food, analysis of peptides or the quest for new molecules with beneficial effects in plant cells.
Mass spectrometry is an analytical technique used to measure the mass-to-charge ratio of ions. The results are presented as a mass spectrum, a plot of intensity as a function of the mass-to-charge ratio.
Dr Renaut explained that there are several different axes regarding LIST’s aims, with the help of SCIEX services. The first is to establish LIST as a reference centre for biotechnology and environmental analysis which means acting as a key opinion leader with invitations as guest speakers at events and hosting showcases etc.
A second axis is related to organising training sessions together with SCIEX as part of the new agreement. “We will decide on subjects and prepare lectures for vocational training for industrial and academic partners”, explained Dr Renaut.
Organising and presenting joint events is third axis for the agreement which could be in the form of a training school or summer school for users of the equipment. Discussions are already taking place for a first event that is likely to be organised in October, followed by training sessions next year.
Finally, testing and critically reviewing new equipment or software Sciex might provide is the last part of the agreement.
“We have already started exchanging, mostly focusing on communication related to the equipment we use, and then we will start discussing a concrete project to see what we can establish together” Dr Renaut said.
The agreement has been signed for a period of three years. “Thank you to the BEAP team [Biotechnologies and Environmental Analytics Platform] as well as researchers using SCIEX machines, and support teams at SCIEX,” concluded Dr Renaut.
