Natural Environment

Europe is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world. The year 2024 was the hottest ever recorded. Across the continent, extreme weather, pollution and biodiversity loss are reshaping ecosystems, economies and our daily life. The need for action has never been clearer.

At the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), research drives solutions for a climate-resilient and a less-polluted future. Scientists and engineers work across disciplines to monitor, understand and predict environmental change, turning data into actionable insights for decision-makers, industries, and communities.

Our mission is to help Luxembourg and our partners cut greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, mitigate climate impacts and build sustainable systems that protect both people and nature, while supporting competitiveness and innovation.

We pioneer and push environmental science and technology solutions to address climate change and pollution, advance precision agriculture, farming and food technologies and enhance the efficient use of natural resources.

ACTIVITY DOMAINS

Our work in the natural environment is structured around three interconnected activity domains.
Each focus on key environmental challenges and offers actionable solutions.

Environmental Systems and Climate Change

Understanding climate impacts on ecosystems and resources through observation, modelling, and digital resilience.

Pollution in the Natural Environment

Monitoring and mitigating pollution in air, water and soil to protect ecosystems and human health, aligned with the EU Zero Pollution ambition.

Climate-Smart Agriculture

Supporting sustainable, productive and climate-adapted food systems through digital technologies, soil science and precision farming.
