LIST AT SMART CITY EXPO WORLD CONGRESS

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a mission-driven Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that develops competitive and market-oriented product/service prototypes for public and private stakeholders.

LIST works across the entire innovation chain, from fundamental and applied research, to the incubation and transfer of technologies.

With its 600 employees, 75% of whom are researchers or innovation experts from all around the world, LIST is active in the fields of informatics, materials and environment. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST is about empowerment:
- Empower European citizens in their choices
- Empower public authorities in their decisions
- Empower businesses in their strategies

At the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, LIST presents a selection of three solutions.

Empower European citizens in their choices

Fossil fuel-based mobility is inevitably linked to greenhouse gas emissions. However, electric cars, even without an exhaust pipe, also generate greenhouse gas emissions.

Even before they take to the road for the first time, electric cars have been polluting the environment right from the manufacturing phase. The batteries are especially complex components, the production of which is energy-intensive.

The aim of the Climobil online app developed by LIST researchers is to let users understand why, how and when electro-mobility is actually green in terms of low-carbon. The second objective is to show which conditions may cause electric vehicles to be counterproductive regarding carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions: for example, what happens when the battery size or lifetime changes? How do winter conditions affect battery performance? What happens when electricity is produced in coal-fired power stations?

How it helps?
- Educates the public about electro-mobility
- Tackles misconceptions
- Supports companies and public authorities in their mobility choices

Empower public authorities in their decisions

Cities have large amounts of high resolution data at their disposal, and with the online platform developed by LIST, cities can answer questions such as: What are the renewable opportunities throughout our city? How can renewable energy usage be maximized across the city? Where can solar panels be placed, which rooftops and facades are suitable? How can buildings be renovated to make them more energy-efficient? How much CO2 emissions can be reduced?...

The Smart City and Region platform, covering multiple cities to date, can answer these questions, taking advantage of interoperability standards for data access, satellite images, 2D (and soon 3D) maps, advanced geospatial high-resolution analysis, prediction/analysis/visualization tools, weather-related information, combining all relevant elements to explore cities as a next generation of distributed renewable power production plants.

How it helps?
- Supports renewable energy production strategies and energy transitions
- Runs renewable energy production simulations and scenarios
- Monitors renewable energy production and efficiency
- Explores energy savings

Empower businesses in their strategies

The smart waste collection market is attracting considerable attention given its importance in making cities more eco-friendly. However, existing decision support systems generally rely on a limited information flow and often offer a static or statistical approach, focusing on specific use-cases such as individuals or municipalities.

LIST and Polygone Sárl are co-designing, building and testing a smart waste collection platform for businesses. The platform will offer data analytics and multi-objective optimization models that combine business, customer and operational criteria among which data generated by fill-level sensor technologies integrated into waste bins. Fill levels, distances, customers’ needs/constraints, truck capacity, time management for drivers and collection centre position are considered to reduce the environmental impact and to maximize service quality. This approach, a first in Luxembourg, will open the way to the development of new services in the waste management sector.

How it helps?
- Reduces environmental impact
- Optimizes overall collection costs
- Personalizes high-quality services based on data
- Develops new customer profiling models using prediction techniques
- Creates new business models
