LIST and Rotarex launch three-year research project to develop advanced coatings for industrial gas valves

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and Rotarex SA have announced the launch of ALDACIA, a three-year research collaboration aimed at developing next-generation functional coatings for gas valves destined for the hydrogen, microelectronics, and semiconductor industries.

The project builds directly on a previous collaboration between the two organisations, which demonstrated that advanced coatings can be applied to the internal surfaces of industrial components operating in highly demanding environments. This initial achievement validated not only the protective potential of such coatings, but also their relevance for applications where conventional surface treatments reach their limits.

With ALDACIA, the partners aim to go significantly further by developing a new class of innovative, multifunctional industrial coatings and by tackling one of the most ambitious challenges in surface engineering: the reliable treatment of complex three‑dimensional internal substrates at industrial scale.

The coatings developed within ALDACIA are designed to combine multiple functions, opening new pathways for smarter, more resilient industrial components.

By combining materials innovation, advanced surface engineering and process development, ALDACIA aims to push the boundaries of industrial coating technologies and enable smarter, more resilient components.

The project name ALDACIA, an acronym for Advanced Coatings for Industrial Applications, also evokes an archaic Italian term meaning audacity or boldness. It reflects the project’s commitment to addressing high‑risk, high‑impact challenges and to pushing the boundaries of what is currently achievable in industrial surface technologies.

Jurgen Joossens, Deputy CEO at LIST, says:

"ALDACIA exemplifies the kind of industry-embedded research that LIST is built to deliver. By combining fundamental materials science with a clear industrial roadmap, this collaboration with Rotarex will generate innovations that are both scientifically significant and directly relevant to critical global markets from microelectronics to clean hydrogen."

Philippe Schmitz, Deputy CEO of Rotarex, says:

“Semiconductor processes are becoming more demanding every year. ALDACIA brings together Rotarex's application expertise and LIST's materials science to make sure our gas control solutions are always ready for what's next.”
